Economists mythologize competition, but under perfect competition all profits get competed away — the market equilibrium is "the heat death of the universe," business stasis, death. "Actually, capitalism and competition are opposites. Capitalism is premised on the accumulation of capital, but under perfect competition all profits get competed away." Real profits require monopoly: a company so good at what it does no other firm can offer a close substitute. Creative monopolists are good for society — they "add entirely new categories of abundance to the world," and the history of progress is better monopolies replacing incumbents.

[Use when]

Evaluating whether a business can capture value, not just create it; interrogating any startup's market-size slide for the union-vs.-intersection lie.

[Why it matters]

The book's central inversion and load-bearing argument: competition destroys value for the producer; monopoly captures it. The practical trap is market-definition lying — monopolists disguise dominance by defining the market as the union of large markets (Google: "just a small player" in global advertising), while competitors lie the opposite way (the British-food-in-Palo-Alto trap: no competition because the market nobody wanted is tiny).
