Venture returns don't follow a normal distribution — they follow a power law, where a tiny few radically outstrip all the rest: "we don’t live in a normal world; we live under a power law." The biggest secret in venture capital is that the best investment in a successful fund equals or outperforms the entire rest of the fund combined. This implies two strange rules: only invest in companies that can return the entire fund — and because rule one is so restrictive, there can be no other rules.

[Use when]

Deciding between diversification and concentration — investments, careers, founding vs. joining; justifying why only the single best opportunity deserves full resources.

[Why it matters]

The quantitative spine of the monopoly argument. The same law governs life: "life is not a portfolio." An entrepreneur can't diversify herself; everyone must think hard about which single thing will be valuable decades from now. Diversified dabbling — in careers, in universities' "excellence" catalogs, in "spray and pray" funds — systematically misses the one thing that dominates. It explains why Thiel advises joining the single best company rather than founding a mediocre one.
