Culture isn't perks or policies — it's what a team on a mission looks like from the inside: "no company has a culture; every company is a culture." It compounds from two practices: hiring people who are excited to work specifically with you ("Why should the 20th employee join your company?") and giving every person exactly one thing they uniquely own ("make every person in the company responsible for doing just one thing"). Defined roles eliminate the internal competition for responsibilities that causes most company conflict — "Internal conflict is like an autoimmune disease."

[Use when]

Someone tries to fix culture with perks, slogans, or an offsite; designing early-team roles.

[Why it matters]

Kills the perk-war theory of culture — no interior decorator, HR consultant, or branding specialist can install it. The "do one thing" rule is the mechanism: when everyone owns exactly one domain, there is nothing to fight over, and collective effort stops being a coordination tax.
