"Any good practical philosophy must start out with the recognition of our having a body." Lin calls this reasonable naturalism: passions and desires are neither good nor bad in themselves — they are simply given. The civilized task is to bring appetite, feeling, intellect, and conscience into harmony, not to purge the flesh as medieval Christians and Buddhists tried to do. Spirit that scorns the body becomes inhuman; a program of life that ignores the body is not noble, it's abstract.

[Use when]

A philosophy, diet, or productivity doctrine asks you to declare war on your own body — try tuning the appetites instead of executing them.

[Why it matters]

Most moral and productivity systems are amputation systems: they declare whole parts of human nature (hunger, laziness, desire, play) as enemies and then demand willpower to fight them. Lin's alternative — expect neither too much nor too little of man, harmonize rather than deny — is cheaper, kinder, and actually works, because it starts from the creature that exists rather than the angel that doesn't.
