Murphy's one law: "The law of your mind is the law of belief." And belief is not reverence for a true doctrine — "Know that belief is a thought in your Mind, and what you think you create." The mechanism cares about the felt thought, never the object: "Remember, it is not the thing believed in, but the belief in your own mind, which brings about the result." That is why a splinter of sidewalk wood set in a ring and a saint's relic produce the same healing — the patient supplies the only ingredient that matters: conviction.

[Use when]

Someone insists only the right method, teacher, or theory can work.

[Why it matters]

It decouples the whole method from any religion, theory, or healer — which is also Murphy's defense of the entire project. If the object doesn't matter, no doctrine can claim a monopoly on results, and no doctrine can be blamed for failures either. Belief is demoted from truth to technique.
