When you aim at something genuinely hard or not-yet-understood, the first thing you meet is darkness — 'a cloud of unknowing, you do not know what.' The instruction is to 'remain in this darkness as long as you can': stay in the not-knowing rather than rushing to resolve it into a clear answer. The unclear state is the work, not the obstacle to the work.

[Use when]

When you hit a problem you don't understand and feel the urge to grab the first available answer. When the early stage of a hard project feels blank and pointless — that blankness is the state to stay in.

[Why it matters]

The object you're after is by definition beyond what you already understand; if you could see it clearly you wouldn't need to work toward it. The darkness is the correct medium, not a malfunction.
