A goon is someone whose job 'has an aggressive element, but, crucially, who exists only because other people employ them.' Armies, lobbyists, PR specialists, telemarketers, corporate lawyers: each side's goons exist only because the other side has goons. Remove one and you could remove them all.

[Use when]

Use to audit: does this role serve customers/users, or out-goon the other side's goons? Use when a 'defensive' hire (lawyer, PR, lobbyist) is proposed — the difference between real defense and matching the other side's arms race is what determines whether it's bullshit.

[Why it matters]

Recognize it in the wild: an arms race of persuasion or force. The tell is that the job is (1) aggressive/manipulative and (2) only needed because the opponent has the same thing. 'Countries need armies only because other countries have armies.' The holder often feels the job is 'essentially manipulative and aggressive' and has no social value — that self-report is the diagnostic.
