'Generally speaking, the Way of the warrior is resolute acceptance of death.' Musashi founds strategy on the individual's willingness to die. It is the opposite of a cost-minimization: the warrior is defined by the death he has already accepted, and freedom of action flows from that acceptance.

[Use when]

Use when fear of loss is making you timid — the source of hesitation is usually an un-accepted worst case. Use to contrast 'win without fighting' (systems, negotiation) with 'accept the worst and move' (personal stakes).

[Why it matters]

The deepest philosophical split. Sun Tzu's crown jewel is winning without fighting — 'to break the enemy's resistance without fighting' — i.e., avoid the cost of battle. Musashi's first move is to accept the ultimate cost, death, as the ground of the whole art.
