The tell of false attention is presupposition. If your focus is aimed only at where you 'suppose beforehand' the thing will appear, you are not attending — you are waiting, and blind to everything else. 'This attention to the preconceived is equivalent to being absorbed in one point of the visible area and not paying attention to the other points.' Expectation is a kind of blindness: the more certain you are of where the important thing will come from, the less you can actually see.

[Use when]

Use when a plan is going wrong but you keep staring at the one spot the plan told you to watch. Use when confirmation bias makes you see only the expected — widen the radius.

[Why it matters]

Ortega names the exact failure mode of attention: the radius of the look is projected by the attention onto one pre-chosen point, leaving 'the rest unattended.' Most 'focus' is really this — concentration that has already decided the answer. True alertness refuses the premature decision.
