How to tell self-making from self-development: self-making is the attempt to be your own origin. 'The essence of the Oedipal complex is the project of becoming God—in Spinoza's formula, causa sui.' The person who is compulsively self-created, who cannot tolerate owing anyone anything, who must be the author of their own life from nothing — is trying to be causa sui, their own first cause. This is a denial of dependence, and dependence is the reminder of death. The tell: an allergic reaction to needing anyone.

[Use when]

Use when someone's self-image depends on owing nothing to anyone — trace it to the causa sui project. Use to understand the horror of gratitude and indebtedness in the hyper-independent.

[Why it matters]

Becker reframes the deepest psychoanalytic complex not as sexual but as existential: the drive to be one's own origin is the drive to be God, to escape the dependence that ends in death. It's the diagnostic for the modern self-made ideal — every 'I did it all myself' is a small theology.
