The more we rehearse disaster, the safer we’ll be from the real thing. If reality intrudes in the form of a car crash or a victim falling off a stretcher, it is important to remember that we are not here to mend broken bones or put out real fires. We are here to simulate.

[Use when]

When a drill, a war game, or a stress test is run to ward off a threat — and the simulation becomes more important than the threat.

[Why it matters]

The SIMUVAC drill is DeLillo's mechanism of modern disaster management: simulation as ritual — rehearse the catastrophe and the real one stays away, but the rehearsal must never be interrupted by actual reality. Preparedness becomes a performance that has to protect itself from the thing it simulates.
