There are four kinds of people in this world: cretins, fools, morons, and lunatics. A lunatic is easily recognized. He is a moron who doesn’t know the ropes. The moron proves his thesis; he has a logic, however twisted it may be. The lunatic, on the other hand, doesn’t concern himself at all with logic; he works by short circuits. For him, everything proves everything else. Everything I’ve said to you so far is false. Good night, Casaubon.

[Use when]

Use when you meet someone for whom every new fact is further proof of the old theory, and you need to name the mechanism instead of arguing the facts.

[Why it matters]

Belbo's bar-room taxonomy is the novel's engine: the lunatic is the figure who reads every event as confirmation of the secret he already carries. It explains why the Diabolicals — and the three editors who mock them — can never argue anyone out of a conspiracy: logic was never the binding agent.
