As men climbed the social ladder, they displayed their position by their refusal to jaunte.

— In our words · Source: The Stars My Destination (Alfred Bester)

[Use when]

You want a social satire detail: a world where everyone can do X, but the elite define themselves by pointedly not doing X; or a mechanism showing how hierarchies reassert themselves against any democratized power.

[Why it matters]

Bester inverts the obvious: the ultimate luxury status is refusing the power everyone else craves. The rich signal power by performing helplessness, riding bicycles and being carried, because only the untouchable can afford to be slow. It's conspicuous consumption of inconvenience, and it exposes how status systems always invert the mass utility into an elite vice.
