To run away from reality by attacking it... denying it... destroying it?

— In our words · Source: The Stars My Destination (Alfred Bester)

[Use when]

You need to unmask a character's campaign of destruction as avoidance; or a diagnostic line that turns a villain's or antihero's aggression into a confession of what they're refusing to face.

[Why it matters]

Robin names Foyle's entire crusade as a disguised flight: he is not hunting, he is fleeing by destroying. Bester's coldest psychological mechanism in the book is that aggression can be a form of avoidance, and the most relentless attackers are the ones who cannot accept life as it is. "You attack and destroy everything that stands in the way of your own insane pattern." This reframes every revenge scene retroactively: Foyle's hunt for Vorga is Foyle running from himself.
