The Man of Sin is born of an Apostasy, or at least comes into power through an apostasy, or is preceded by an apostasy, or would not be except for an apostasy. The Israelites, or at least great numbers of them, put off their own sacred religion, and then the enemy was allowed to come in.

[Use when]

Use when diagnosing how a bad regime or movement actually rose — look for the prior internal collapse, not the external force. Use when tempted to blame the invader instead of the open gate.

[Why it matters]

Newman's reading of St. Paul reverses the usual fear: the Antichrist is not an outside invader overpowering a faithful people — he is the product of an inside hollowing. The falling away comes first; the tyrant only harvests what the apostasy planted. Evil's power is downstream of the faithful's surrender.
