Catch the tell of displaced responsibility: when someone (or you) says a feeling did it, the feeling isn't the agent. Assigning agency to the emotion is the tell that a choice is being disowned.

[Use when]

You hear 'I couldn't help it,' 'love made me,' or 'I was carried away,' and you want to tell an explanation from an excuse.

[Why it matters]

Francesca's account is self-exoneration from end to end: "Love, that exempts no one beloved from loving, / Seized me with pleasure... Love has conducted us unto one death." Love is the subject of every verb. She is the object — seized, conducted, exempted. She never once appears as the one who chose. Then she blames the book: "Galeotto was the book and he who wrote it." The tell is grammatical: when the emotion is the subject and the person is the object, a choice is being smuggled into a description.
