Dying, Quixote renounces everything: 'I am no longer Don Quixote of La Mancha, but Alonso Quixano... Now I see through their absurdities and deceptions.' His friends do not celebrate his recovery. Samson Carrasco begs: 'Now that we have intelligence of the lady Dulcinea being disenchanted, are you taking this line... Hush, for heaven's sake, be rational and let's have no more nonsense.' They plead with the sane man to go back to being mad. The delusion has outgrown its host; the audience needs it now.

[Use when]

Someone tries to walk back a public story and the crowd revolts. Understand: they are not defending the teller, they are defending their own investment. Plan the exit knowing the story has shareholders now.

[Why it matters]

A story that has gone social no longer belongs to its teller. The community has invested in it, built rituals around it, and made it load-bearing for their own identities. Renunciation then reads as betrayal, not honesty. Founders, prophets, and public figures all discover this: you can stop believing, but you cannot unilaterally end a story other people live inside.
