At the gateway called “This Moment,” Zarathustra asks: must not whatever can happen have already happened — and must not “This Moment draweth all coming things after it? Consequently—itself also?” The test of a life: courage “saith: ‘WAS THAT life? Well! Once more!’” Live so that you could will every moment of this day to return forever, unchanged.

[Use when]

Before a big decision, or when a routine day feels tolerable but dead — run the recurrence test on it.

[Why it matters]

It turns every decision into a verdict on your whole life. “Would I relive this exact day forever?” exposes the meetings, habits, and compromises you are merely enduring — anything you would not recur is something to change or cut now.
