When Ustina dies, Arseny's grief has a shape given to it by an elder: 'You took her earthly life from her' — 'Then give her yours.' And the reason it is possible: 'Love made you and Ustina a single whole, which means a part of Ustina is still here. That is you.' The mechanism is substitution, not mourning. You cannot bring the dead back, but you can walk their un-lived path in their place. Grief's real choice is not 'move on or not' — it is whether you assume the unfinished life or abandon it. Ripped from the novel (translated from the Russian by the cutter): «Значит, отдай ей свою.» — "'Then give her yours.'" And: «Любовь сделала вас с Устиной единым целым, а значит, часть Устины все еще здесь. Это – ты.» — "Love made you and Ustina a single whole, which means a part of Ustina is still here. That is you."
