Aramis doesn't ask Fouquet to join a conspiracy; he presents a finished fact and a rigged choice: “Quel roi? dit Aramis de son plus doux accent, celui qui vous hait ou celui qui vous aime?” The swap is done, the lightning already struck — “Un éclair sans tonnerre, cela ne réveille jamais personne.” The technique: never pitch the crime; pitch the menu after the crime, with both options pointing at you.

[Use when]

When presented with “it's already done, just choose how to live with it,” rewind: the choice was made for you precisely so you'd feel you have none.

[Why it matters]

The fait accompli is the conspirator's favorite tense. By the time you're asked, refusal means undoing something, which feels heavier than preventing it. Dumas shows how to make complicity feel like the path of least resistance.
