Effective client management: maximizing the influence of external sponsors over affiliated armed groups

The sponsor-affiliate (patron-proxy) relationship is won or lost on "client management": the IRGC held 35 years of influence over SCIRI, the Badr Corps, and the militias that descended from Badr in Iraqi politics by building trusted agents during a formative period of tight control and integration in the Iran-Iraq War, then placing those agents at the head of new organizations after Badr returned to Iraq.

[Use when]

Manage the client before you arm it — lasting proxy influence comes from trusted agents planted during a period of tight control, not from the weapons supplied later.

[Why it matters]

A U.S. Army major's compact theory of proxy management built around the IRGC's 35-year run with Iraqi clients — the clearest staff-college frame for reading how Tehran still manages its affiliate network, and where sponsor control typically breaks down.
