Neural Machine Translation for Papiamento

With roughly 3,000 sentence pairs, open-source tools, and a rented cloud GPU, the thesis trained the first English-to-Papiamento neural machine translation model producing semi-understandable output — proof that state-of-the-art NMT now reaches the estimated 98% of the world's languages that lack large datasets, as an aid to human translators rather than a replacement.

[Use when]

When the cost of a capability drops 100x, the strategy flips — small players stop waiting for incumbents and build the thing themselves.

[Why it matters]

It's a working template for any low-resource language community — language preservation no longer waits for Big Tech; a government innovation lab did it on a thesis budget.
