It turns a commercial broadband constellation into a spectrum watchdog — interference characterization and geolocation, two steps of the Joint Spectrum Interference Resolution process, get faster and cheaper without new hardware in orbit.
A new Doppler-based method using frequency data from a single O3b antenna can geolocate Ka-band EMI (jammer) sources to within 16 km across O3b's service area — latitude error averaging 3.8 km, longitude 11.8 km — enough to mitigate interference or shrink the search box for higher-capability assets; modeled as a low-cost capability units could maintain organically.
Why it matters
It turns a commercial broadband constellation into a spectrum watchdog — interference characterization and geolocation, two steps of the Joint Spectrum Interference Resolution process, get faster and cheaper without new hardware in orbit.
Use when: Repurpose commercial infrastructure for military sensing — the constellation was built for broadband, but its Doppler signature makes it a jammer-finder too.
