Technological Evolution of High Temperature Superconductors

Superconductors sit at the junction of the energy and naval lanes — a cable that moves power with near-zero loss rewrites both grid economics and warship design.

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable is nearing full-scale integration — already demonstrated in the commercial electric grid and successfully tested by the Navy (a working HTS degaussing system on a modern U.S. destroyer in 2008), with electric-ship propulsion and high-energy weapons like rail guns and lasers as the next targets; patent-trend analysis projects continued innovation.

Why it matters

Superconductors sit at the junction of the energy and naval lanes — a cable that moves power with near-zero loss rewrites both grid economics and warship design.

Use when: Patent filings are a leading indicator — when you want to know where a technology is going, count what's being claimed, not what's being announced.
