The Island that broke the ocean's surface and what it left behind

A case study in how rising seas and human activity endanger coastal heritage worldwide — and how a small island can inventory what it has before it disappears.

Aruba's underwater cultural heritage — submerged sites spanning the Archaic, Ceramic, and Historic periods — is largely unmapped and under threat from mechanical, biological, chemical, and human factors; the thesis inventories known and expected archaeological resources and weighs in-situ against ex-situ preservation to argue for a managed framework for the island's submerged heritage.

Why it matters

A case study in how rising seas and human activity endanger coastal heritage worldwide — and how a small island can inventory what it has before it disappears.

Use when: You can't protect what you haven't inventoried — the heritage survey is the prerequisite for any preservation policy.
