"At Carthage, drinking alcohol was banned if you were working on pilot boats in the ports, if you were sitting as a judge and if you were trying to conceive a child"

— In our words · Source: Carthage: A New History (Eve MacDonald)

[Use when]

You need a sobriety rule people will actually keep.

[Why it matters]

The city imported Rhodian wine by the amphora and banned drinking in three places: on the harbour pilot boats, on the judge's bench and when a couple was trying for a child. The ancient source for the rule is Plato's Laws, Book II, which gives it as Carthaginian law.
