When your operation breaks a person below you, do you try to pay them off with a small coin while wondering why they might dirty your equipment?

— In our words · Source: A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens)

[Use when]

Your company ruins a contractor's livelihood and offers a tiny gift card. Scrap the token gesture and pay the full cost of the damage.

[Why it matters]

Tossing cheap cash at a deep injury insults the victim. They will throw the coin back when your guards aren't looking. You buy yourself a lifelong enemy for the price of lunch.
