VALIS could be God, an alien, a computer, or a pattern imposed on chaos. PKD deliberately refuses to make the distinction comfortable. The move is not to solve it but to keep a literal evidence ledger: Claim, then Evidence, then Alternative explanation, then What remains unexplained.

[Use when]

A text offers you a mystery and pressures you to choose belief or dismissal: keep the ledger instead.

[Why it matters]

Most books about revelation want you to pick a side: believer or skeptic. VALIS is built to keep both readings alive simultaneously, and that is the experiment. The ledger is the discipline: every time Fat adds an entry to the revelation column, the narrator adds one to the breakdown column, and the reader has to hold both without collapsing them. Resist the temptation to solve it, the refusal is the point.
