Card #c441IR // #c441Verbatim excerpt
I am Horselover Fat, and I am writing this in the third person to gain much-needed objectivity. Fat believes he is receiving information from a transcendent intelligence. Dick, the authorial persona, investigates Fat. They are the same person.

[Use when]

A narrator claims to be investigating a belief they already hold: watch who appointed the investigator.

[Why it matters]

This is the doorway and the trap at once. The book turns autobiography into an epistemological problem: every piece of evidence for the revelation is gathered by the man who needs the revelation to be true, and every debunking is issued by the same man who needs it debunked. Objectivity is announced in the very sentence that destroys it. When you read VALIS, you are not watching an investigation, you are watching a mind build the apparatus that will certify its own conclusions.
