Card #c449IR // #c449Verbatim excerpt
Michael Gilhaney, said the Sergeant, is nearly sixty years of age by plain computation and if he is itself, he has spent no less than thirty-five years riding his bicycle. If it was not that his bicycle was stolen every Monday he would be sure to be more than half-way now. Half-way to where? Half-way to being a bicycle himself, said the Sergeant.

[Use when]

Identity is treated as a substance that can be diluted, exchanged, or stolen: ask who keeps the ledger.

[Why it matters]

The joke is a genuine identity problem. If atoms are exchanged between rider and ridden, and the Sergeant's physics says they are, then at what percentage of bicycle-atoms does Gilhaney stop being Gilhaney? The book poses the Ship of Theseus as a police matter. Identity, in this parish, is not a soul or a memory but an atomic ledger, and the ledger is kept by the County Council.
