The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; its Kindness infinite. The House is infinite halls, tides, statues, vestibules, a universe that provides: food from the sea, fresh water, shelter, beauty on every wall. It asks nothing.

[Use when]

The setting is the antagonist in every story you know: try one where the setting is innocent and the people are the problem.

[Why it matters]

Most metaphysical fiction gives us a hostile or indifferent universe. This book runs the control experiment: what if the universe is benevolent? The House never lies to Piranesi and never traps him, every trap in the story is human (the Other, Arne-Sayles). The dread dissolves into something stranger: a universe you can trust. Do you trust the House? I ask Myself. Yes, I answer Myself. The terror is not in the House; it is in what people do with it.
