The Prophet called the Other 'Ketterley'. Val Ketterley, the Other, does not love the House; he uses it. He wants its power, its other worlds, its prestige. He keeps Piranesi docile, feeds him tasks, withholds the truth. Two relationships to the same infinite reality: Piranesi's devotion and Ketterley's extraction.

[Use when]

Two people inhabit the same reality and one is thriving while the other schemes: check whether the difference is love vs. use.

[Why it matters]

The book's moral axis is not good vs. evil but love vs. use. Ketterley treats the House the way a bad reader treats a text, as a resource to be strip-mined. Piranesi treats it the way a good reader treats a book worth ripping, with attention, gratitude, return visits. The villain is not a metaphysical force; he is a bad reader. The unreliability is not in the House but in the exploiter's relationship to it.
