Therefore the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him. We can form a single united body, while the enemy must split up into fractions. If he sends reinforcements everywhere, he will everywhere be weak.

[Use when]

Facing a stronger opponent: don't match him everywhere, make him guard everywhere.

[Why it matters]

The leverage chapter. You do not need to be stronger overall; you need to be stronger at the single point of contact, and you get that by making the enemy defend everywhere. Conceal where you will strike, "for then the enemy will have to prepare against a possible attack at several different points," and his strength spreads thin against possibilities while yours concentrates against a certainty. "Numerical weakness comes from having to prepare against possible attacks; numerical strength, from compelling our adversary to make these preparations against us." Uncertainty is a weapon, and you aim it at the enemy's deployments: threaten what he holds dear and he will come to you, on your terms, divided.
