"Philosophy not only begins with the individual, but also ends with the individual." The person is the final fact of life — "an end in himself, and not a means to other creations of the human mind." Lin's test: the greatest empire on earth exists so that an ordinary Englishman in Sussex "may live a fairly happy and reasonable life." A false philosophy inverts it and assumes the man in Sussex exists so that there may be a great empire. States, institutions, and civilizations are judged by one metric: do individual lives get happier and more reasonable?

[Use when]

An institution, ideology, or "greater good" argument asks you to be the means — demand proof that you, the individual, are the end.

[Why it matters]

Every abstract system — state, party, class, market, ideology — quietly tries to turn persons into fuel. Lin's doctrine is the acid test that dissolves them all: if the scheme doesn't terminate in a happier individual life, it's a machine for consuming people. This is the argument to reach for whenever someone asks you to sacrifice yourself for a collective abstraction.
