A box ticker exists 'only or primarily to allow an organization to be able to claim it is doing something that, in fact, it is not doing.' The role's product is the appearance of action — a fact-finding commission, a compliance officer, a 'leisure coordinator' who exists so the org can say it offers leisure.

[Use when]

Use to audit: does this role change the underlying thing, or just certify that the thing was supposedly done? Use when an org says it 'does' something (compliance, wellbeing, quality) — look for the box ticker whose output is the certificate, not the change.

[Why it matters]

Recognize it in the wild: the job's deliverable is documentation, not outcome. The tell is that the work produces evidence-of-doing rather than doing — the box gets ticked, the thing the box claims to track never changes. It's the government or corporation telling the public (or itself) 'we're on it' when nobody actually is.
