Your life arrives empty and already numbered; the essence of your life is what you occupy it with. 'The life that we are given has its minutes numbered, and in addition it is given to us empty... we have to fill it on our own... Thus the essence of each life lies in its occupations.' Presence is the deliberate choice of your occupations, because they literally constitute your life. What you fill your minutes with is not a detail of your life — it is your life.

[Use when]

Use when deciding how to spend your time — the choice of occupation is the choice of your life's essence, not a scheduling detail. Use to audit whether your actual occupations match your claimed values.

[Why it matters]

Ortega contrasts man with the animal: the animal's life is pre-filled by instinct, so it never has to choose; man's life 'has never been empty, undetermined' is false — man's life IS empty and undetermined, so he must occupy it. This makes attention a matter of identity: your occupations are the only content your life has. Choose them as if choosing your self.
