How to tell romantic love from a religion: look at what the partner is being asked to provide. 'In one word, the love object is God... the love relationship of modern man is a religious problem.' When someone needs their partner to confer absolute meaning, vindication, and immortality — to be 'springtime' and 'heaven' — the partner has been deified. The diagnostic: does the relationship collapse if the partner stops reflecting perfection? If yes, it was a religion, not a relationship.

[Use when]

Use when a relationship feels like life-or-death and you can't tell why — ask what the partner is being made to symbolize. Use when the end of a romance feels like the end of meaning itself.

[Why it matters]

Becker shows that romantic love quietly replaced God as the source of ultimate meaning — the partner became the being who could make one's existence justified. It explains the otherwise baffling intensity and fragility of romantic attachment: you're not losing a person, you're losing your deity.
