How to tell why a deified relationship will turn to resentment: dependency is baked in. 'If the partner becomes God he can just as easily become the Devil.' The more you need the partner to justify your existence, the more you're bound to them — and the more you'll resent the binding. 'When you confuse personal love and cosmic heroism you are bound to fail in both spheres.' No person can bear being someone else's immortality; the deity always gets resented.

[Use when]

Use when a relationship is cycling between idealization and resentment — the deification is the cause of both. Use to see why 'finding the one' so reliably leads to feeling trapped.

[Why it matters]

This is the mechanism behind the love-to-hate flip in intense relationships: deification and demonization are two faces of the same dependency. You need the god, so you resent needing the god. It predicts the arc of every relationship built on totalization rather than affection.
