If there is something comforting—religious, if you want—about paranoia, there is still also anti-paranoia, where nothing is connected to anything, a condition not many of us can bear for long.

— In our words · Source: Gravity's Rainbow (Thomas Pynchon)

[Use when]

Noticing which pole you’re on — when everything feels like a plot, or when nothing feels connected to anything — and what you’re avoiding by being there.

[Why it matters]

The opposed pair that structures the whole book. Paranoia comforts because everything means something; anti-paranoia terrifies because nothing does. Slothrop cycles between them, and most of us can’t bear either pole for long.
