Is that a choosing, or is it a passing-over? Are they Elect, or are they Preterite, and doomed as dodoes?

— In our words · Source: Gravity's Rainbow (Thomas Pynchon)

[Use when]

Asking of any hierarchy, war, or market: who was chosen to come, and who was chosen to fail?

[Why it matters]

Pynchon’s Calvinist split runs under everything: the Elect are chosen, the Preterite are passed over — the dodoes, doomed by the same choosing that saves the others. Every system quietly sorts its saved and its damned.
