Belbo recovered his most genuine gift: his sense of the ridiculous. And Belbo, now invincible, said, “Ma gavte la nata...” Thus Belbo had escaped the error of the world and its movements, had now become, himself, the point of suspension, the Fixed Pin, the Place from which the vault of the world is hung, while beneath his feet the wire and the sphere went on swinging, from pole to pole, without peace, the earth slipping away under them, showing always a new continent.

[Use when]

Use when the only dignified move is to refuse the game entirely — to hold your silence and your scorn at the same time.

[Why it matters]

At the gallows Belbo refuses the one thing that would save him — revealing a secret he knows is empty — and his refusal is pure style: a Piedmontese insult, a sense of the ridiculous. Dying, he becomes what the pendulum's mathematics always promised: the still point everything else rotates around.
