Treat inner state as portable: you carry the heaven or the hell into every place, so changing the address — job, city, relationship — won't change what you bring. Fix the mind, not the location.

— In our words · Source: Paradise Lost (John Milton)

[Use when]

You're deciding whether to change your circumstances (quit, move, leave) and want to know whether the problem will follow you.

[Why it matters]

Cast into Hell, Satan asserts the one thing his conqueror cannot take: "the mind is its own place, and in itself can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." The line is genuinely true — which is why Milton the ironist puts it in a liar's mouth. Satan uses a real truth to justify staying exactly as he is. The irony is the lesson's edge: the person most fluent in this truth is also the one refusing to apply it. He will not make a Heaven of Hell; he will only make a Hell of Heaven.
