Spot the tell that someone would rather stay broken than lose face: the fix is known and available, and the only thing blocking it is 'what will they think of me.'

— In our words · Source: Paradise Lost (John Milton)

[Use when]

Someone can articulate exactly what would fix their situation and still won't take it — and you want to see the real blocker.

[Why it matters]

In the soliloquy Satan comes within one word of repenting — "is there no place left for repentance?" — and answers himself: "none left but by submission." He has named the fix. What blocks it is not impossibility but image: "that word disdain forbids me, and my dread of shame among the spirits beneath." The cost of repair is the loss of face before the very crowd he misled. When the obstacle to repair is not capability but reputation, the person is negotiating with their image, not with the problem.
