Rank wrongs by their temperature: the cold, deliberate, premeditated wrong is worse than the hot, reactive one. Betrayal beats rage, and it should be treated accordingly.

[Use when]

You're deciding how seriously to take a wrong, or someone is lumping a cold betrayal in with a hot mistake, and you want a principled ranking.

[Why it matters]

At the bottom of Hell, beneath even the violent, the treacherous sit "within the ice," in a lake that is "glass, and not of water." Betrayal is cold, so its punishment is cold made solid — frozen at the coldest distance from the warmth of trust. Dante's ranking is deliberate: fraud and betrayal sit lower than violence, because violence can be hot and impulsive, but betrayal is cold and chosen.
