The difference between a trap and a practice is naming: the same flaw, once named, becomes work you can do on yourself instead of a loop you're stuck in.

[Use when]

You're stuck in a pattern and can't tell whether you're trapped or working on it, and you want the criterion that separates the two.

[Why it matters]

In Purgatory the proud carry the stone that does what pride refused to do: "And were I not impeded by the stone, / Which this proud neck of mine doth subjugate, / Whence I am forced to hold my visage down." The bending is voluntary and purgative, not punitive: "And here must I this burden bear for it." The difference between Hell and Purgatory is not the sin — it's the posture toward it. Hell makes the sin permanent. Purgatory makes it a task.
