Aramis turns Philippe's life sentence into a legal brief for his kingship: “Vous aviez donc le droit de régner, puisqu’on vous le conteste; vous aviez donc le droit d’être déclaré, puisqu’on vous séquestre; vous êtes donc de sang divin, puisqu’on n’a pas osé verser votre sang comme celui de vos serviteurs.” Every abuse becomes evidence of legitimacy — they hid you because you're real, they didn't dare kill you because you're sacred. It's rhetoric, not law, but rhetoric is what moves the prince.

[Use when]

When someone argues that their persecution proves their importance, separate the suffering (real) from the conclusion (unearned).

[Why it matters]

The argument works because it converts suffering into status — the most flattering alchemy there is. Dumas shows how a skilled advocate can forge a title deed out of a prison record.
