**WHAT HAPPENED:** "'Severian. I am a torturer. Or rather, I am an apprentice of the torturers, Liege. Of the Order of the Seekers for Truth and Penitence.' I drew a deep breath. 'I am a Vodalarius. One of the thousands of Vodalarii of whose existence you are unaware.' It was a term I had scarcely heard." **WHAT I THINK HAPPENED:** He pledged himself to Vodalus. **WHAT'S WEIRD:** He coins "Vodalarius" on the spot — "a term I had scarcely heard" — and the great rebel accepts it without blinking. Either the word is real and Severian's lying about inventing it, or it's fake and Vodalus is playing along. Both are interesting.

[Use when]

Use when a made-up word sails through unchallenged.

[Why it matters]

Severian's lies work because he tells them to people who need them to be true — watch who never checks. The detective question is rarely "is he lying"; it's "who profits from not noticing."
