**WHAT HAPPENED:** "How old would you say Dorcas is? Eighteen? Nineteen, perhaps?" She is found by the water, young and golden-haired, mud caking in her hair. Much later she walks home alone: "she had lived forty years ago or more though it had now fallen into decay." **WHAT I THINK HAPPENED:** She's a young woman Severian rescued. **WHAT'S WEIRD:** You don't go home to a house you lived in "forty years ago or more" when you're nineteen. Severian reports both facts and connects neither.

[Use when]

Use when two true facts in the same story can't both be true.

[Why it matters]

The Dorcas case teaches the game's golden rule: Severian never lies about what he saw — he just never does the arithmetic. The facts are all on the page; the conclusion is your move.
