**WHAT HAPPENED:** "At one place in the Hall of Meaning there are two mirrors... anyone who walks down the Hall of Meaning sees himself infinitely multiplied there. Each mirror reflects the images in its twin." **WHAT I THINK HAPPENED:** Palace decoration. **WHAT'S WEIRD:** Wolfe puts a machine for generating infinite Severians in the hall called Meaning. Every reflection claims to be the real one. Sound like any narrator you know?

[Use when]

Use when the story's furniture is the story's argument.

[Why it matters]

The mirrors are the book's thesis rendered as furniture: the boy, the torturer, the Autarch, the writer — each reflects the others, and none will tell you which one is holding the pen. The three-column game exists because there are infinite columns.
