**WHAT HAPPENED:** With a fellow apprentice's silver he takes a girl upstairs; halfway through undressing her he stops cold: "There was nothing of Thecla about her. All that had been a chance resemblance, some gestures, a similarity in dress." He demands, "You are not the Chatelaine Thecla. What am I doing here with you?" She answers: "I am Thecla. If you want me to be." **WHAT I THINK HAPPENED:** A brothel transaction. **WHAT'S WEIRD:** His hands picked the girl who looked like Thecla; his mouth claims it was chance. Which is telling the truth — the hands or the mouth? And why is he already haunted by a prisoner of his own guild he claims to barely know?

[Use when]

Use when someone's actions name the want their words won't.

[Why it matters]

The first Thecla-doubling happens while she is still alive, not after the tragedy — the haunting starts before the catastrophe. Wolfe shows you the obsession first and the disaster later. The detective reads backwards.
